such stuff as dreams are made on
There’s a reason I have a fondness for shows like American Idol and Project Runway — not just because they are trashy and addictive and, um, trashy — but because they showcase people going after their dreams. And when that finale roles around and whatsherface is crowned with a record deal or a fashion line hooty-hoo, I’m a big blubbering mess along with the rest of ‘em. There is really nothing better than whatsherface achieving her dream.
Oh, except when whatsherface is someone I know. I have outrageously talented friends. It’s kind of ridiculous. And they work so hard and keep on keepin’ on in ways that I can only hope will rub off on me. We celebrate each other’s successes, rally around tough times, and do our best work, often, together. It’s not really a matter of if someone will “make it,” but when…
One of my best friends is currently in Vienna, rehearsing for the run of her first show with an amazing theater company based out of New York. The company is edgy and strange and combines music and text and drama and comedy in all of these perfect ways that seem made for my friend — and the job comes with a year or more of travel to all sorts of lovely European destinations. It is, quite simply, a dream. And thinking about it brings a huge goofy grin to my face, and makes me want to run about the streets and encourage random strangers to try! and leap! and play! and reach for zee starrrrrrs!
But I live in Oakland, and I’d like to live, so I’m just gonna write about it here.
Here’s to you, Alison. I am deeply grateful for your friendship and for your dreams, onto which I cling, gleefully!
Ol’ whatsherface,
L
One of my favorite songs — “Glory Bound” by Martin Sexton. He wrote this before he had made it big, but it’s about being famous and wanting to come home. It’s like me writing a song about being really frustrated with how rich I am. Yeah. Or… nevermind. Enjoy.
